Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to attend the 24th meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) on July 3-4.
Russian President Putin is preparing for the meeting in Astana, as reported by Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, while Chinese President Xi’s participation has been confirmed by Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying.
The SCO, established in 2001 in Shanghai, focuses on political, economic, security, and defense issues in Eurasia with nine member states.
Putin and Xi, both part of the Council of Heads of State, will meet amid deepening ties between Moscow and Beijing, particularly in the face of Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres is also expected to participate in the event, following his absence from Ukraine’s peace summit in June.
