Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has issued a warning about the tense situation along the country’s borders with NATO and Ukraine. He expressed concerns that Western countries are looking to drag Belarus into their military conflicts to weaken their defenses and escalate tensions.
Lukashenko made these remarks during a meeting with Russia’s top MP, Vyacheslav Volodin, noting the recent reports of Ukrainian and NATO forces massing along Belarus’ frontiers. The Belarusian Defense Ministry also reported troop build-ups by Ukraine and NATO near their borders.
Belarusian Chief of General Staff Pavel Muraveiko mentioned that there are approximately 20,000 NATO soldiers stationed near Belarus, including US troops, which are viewed as an irritant to the country’s military forces. Colonel Vadim Lukashevich also raised concerns about increasing tension along the Belarus-Ukraine border.
The situation is deemed very serious, and President Lukashenko emphasized the need for Belarus to remain vigilant. As a close ally to Russia, Belarus has allowed Moscow to deploy forces on its territory for strategic purposes. This alliance has also resulted in joint military exercises and the strategic placement of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus.
