The US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced $2.3 billion in new security assistance for Ukraine ahead of NATO’s 75th anniversary summit. This aid includes more Patriot and NASAMS air defense interceptors to be provided on an accelerated timeline. Ukraine’s Minister of Defense expressed gratitude, affirming that the support will help stop Russian aggression.
Despite ongoing conflict, the US has provided over $51 billion in military aid since Russia’s invasion in 2022. Delays in funding approval had caused setbacks, but recent legislative authorizations have allowed for $61 billion in aid. President Zelensky emphasized the urgency of assistance, highlighting Russian attacks with guided aerial bombs.
Austin assured continuous support through bilateral agreements and discussed plans for enhancing Ukraine’s security needs. Emphasizing Ukraine’s NATO aspirations, both officials expressed commitment to strengthening ties with the Alliance. NATO’s support for Ukraine has been crucial in deterring Russian aggression and providing essential capabilities.
The aid package comprises $150 million from presidential drawdown authority for immediate needs and the rest from the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative for long-term contracts. Austin affirmed the US’s unwavering support and commitment to helping Ukraine push back against aggression.
