Traditional Japanese crafts popular with Haneda Airport tourists

Japan Mastery Collection, opened at Haneda’s Terminal 3, offers a wide range of items such as the eye-catching Sanuki Kagari Temari hand ball, Tsugaru Vidro glassworks, and Kutaniyaki porcelain sake cups decorated with gold leaf.

The weak yen is also driving the popularity of these crafts, attracting an increasing number of international tourists. In fiscal 2023, the number of tourists flying to and from Haneda on international flights skyrocketed to 10.37 million, with foreign visitors making up 95% of shoppers at JMC.

With efforts to develop new sales channels and showcase the artisanship passed down through generations, craft producers are eager to share their creations with the world. Yoshie Nakamura of Haneda Future Research Institute expressed the importance of supporting craftspeople and introducing their works to a global audience.
