Serious Concerns Raised Over Finland’s Constitutional Review Process
The chairperson of the Green League, Sofia Virta, has urged the Parliament to engage in a meaningful discussion regarding the state of constitutional review in Finland. This call comes in response to criticisms voiced by legal scholar Kaarlo Tuori, who expressed concerns about the increasing politicization of the Parliament’s Constitutional Law Committee.
Tuori highlighted instances where the committee seemed to prioritize government bills over human rights considerations, culminating in a controversial decision on a border security bill. The committee’s dismissal of expert opinions has raised alarms among politicians, with calls for a more balanced approach to legal decision-making.
Other political leaders, such as Li Andersson and Anders Adlercreutz, have also called for reforms to strengthen the rule of law in Finland, including the establishment of a constitutional court. While some members of the Centre downplay concerns of politicization, the issue remains a topic of debate within the legal and political spheres.
