Envoys from two dozen countries gathered in Doha to discuss various issues, marking the first time that Afghan Taliban representatives attended a U.N.-sponsored meeting.
Despite the exclusion of Afghan women from the talks, the Taliban engaged in constructive exchanges with various countries. Chief Taliban government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid highlighted the need for cooperation in areas like the private sector and drug control.
While many expressed disappointment over the exclusion of women and civil society representatives, the Taliban leveraged the meeting to showcase their officials engaging with the world. The U.N. emphasized that the talks did not signify normalization or recognition of the Taliban as legitimate rulers.
The closed-door discussions allowed the Taliban to focus on their priorities, shielded from criticism by directing anger towards the U.N. for excluding Afghan women. Despite the lack of official recognition, the Taliban managed to bolster their image through a successful public relations effort.
