The UK Labour’s spokesperson, David Lammy, firmly rejected the idea of discussing Falklands/Malvinas sovereignty with Argentina’s president. He expressed interest in dialogue with Argentina on bilateral matters but ruled out any talks on the Falklands issue.
Lammy, a potential future head of British diplomacy, highlighted Labour’s focus on building closer relations with the Caribbean and South America under Labour leader Keir Starmer. He emphasized the need for a consistent foreign policy, unlike the frequent changes seen under Conservative administrations.
Argentine president Javier Milei’s interest in improving relations with the UK and addressing the Falklands sovereignty issue was noted, although the differences in political ideologies were acknowledged. Milei admires Margaret Thatcher’s economic reforms and aims for a similar approach to resolving the Falklands dispute.
