Japan supports Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring efforts

Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa commended Sri Lanka for its recent actions to address its economic crisis and debt restructuring, following an agreement with creditor nations. Kamikawa and her Sri Lankan counterpart, Ali Sabry, met in Tokyo to discuss further promoting exchanges of human resources between their countries.

Last week, Sri Lanka announced a debt restructuring deal of $5.8 billion with creditor countries, including China and Japan. The country defaulted on its foreign debt in 2022, leading to an economic crisis.

This meeting follows previous discussions in May in Colombo, where Kamikawa and Sabry reaffirmed their dedication to transparently restructuring Sri Lanka’s debt. The Japanese government welcomes Sri Lanka’s efforts and collaboration in resolving its financial challenges.

It is a positive step towards stabilizing the country’s economy and strengthening international relations. The cooperation between Japan and Sri Lanka sets a promising path for future endeavors and mutual benefit.
