Excitement is in the air as climbing season begins in Gilgit-Baltistan, with both local and foreign climbers flocking to the region to conquer the towering eight-thousander peaks, most notably K2. The Gilgit-Baltistan Tourism Department has issued over 1,700 permits to foreign tourists for climbing in the area, with 175 permits specifically for scaling K2.
Renowned climber Sajid Ali Sadpara, son of the legendary Mohammad Ali Sadpara, has set his sights on climbing K2 without oxygen, in addition to tackling Broad Peak this season. Various expedition teams, including female groups, have already established their base camps at different peaks such as Nanga Parbat and Gasherbrum.
As supplies are being delivered to base camps and climbers gear up for the summit push after July 20, the anticipation is high for the two all-female expedition teams en route to Skardu to conquer K2. With permit fees contributing to the region’s economy, the mountaineering scene in Gilgit-Baltistan is buzzing with activity.
