Fatal stampede at India religious festival in Uttar Pradesh
Tragedy struck at a religious gathering in northern India as a stampede claimed the lives of at least 60 people and left scores injured. The incident occurred in a village in Hathras district of Uttar Pradesh state, where more than 150 people were rushed to hospitals.

Government official Ashish Kumar confirmed that at least 60 bodies had reached mortuaries in the district, with the death toll potentially rising. Reports indicated that over 15,000 people were present for an event with religious leader Bhole Baba, surpassing the permitted capacity of 5000.

Survivor Jyoti described the chaos, stating, “Everyone was in a rush to leave … There was no way out and people were falling on each other.” Bodies were transported to hospitals and morgues as the community grappled with the aftermath.

Located 350 kilometers southwest of state capital Lucknow, the tragedy highlights the risks of overcrowding at religious events in India. The absence of adequate safety measures often leads to deadly stampedes during such gatherings.
