Far right scores historic victory in French first-round vote

Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) party made historic gains in the first round of France’s parliamentary election, securing 33% of the vote. Despite the strong showing, the final outcome of the election will depend on alliances built in the days leading up to the runoff vote next week.

President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist party suffered a setback with only 20% of the vote, while a leftwing bloc followed with 28%. Macron called for the snap election after RN’s success in the European Parliament elections last month.

The possibility of an RN-led government raises questions about the future of the European Union and the party’s funding for its proposed spending plans. The euro saw a slight increase in value following the election results.

As parties strategize for the runoff, alliances are being formed to prevent Le Pen’s party from gaining more ground. RN lawmakers have urged the Republicans party to withdraw from districts where they have less chance of winning to strengthen the chance of defeating RN.

The ultimate outcome of the election remains uncertain as candidates must confirm their participation in the runoff by Tuesday evening.
