Unrest in Warrap State: Suspension of Chiefs Sparks Controversy

Recently, the Warrap State Minister of Local Government suspended eight chiefs from the Kuach community, including Paramount Chief Joseph Kuol Amet, following a petition they submitted to the State Assembly. The petition demanded the removal of certain officials blamed for the death penalty on Lual Ngong and others.

The controversial death penalty stemmed from the “Green Book” by-law, which mandates execution by firing squad for convicted murderers. The suspension of Chief Kuol Amet and seven others caused an uproar, with youth leader Achuil Kuc condemning the action as unjust.

Speaking against the suspension, Kuc emphasized the need for peaceful resolution, urging the government to reinstate the chiefs. Minister Elia Mawien defended the decision, citing the chiefs’ alleged role in inciting unrest. Nevertheless, the community continues to seek justice through petitions and calls for the revocation of the suspension.
