The World Bank Group (WBG) has approved two new programs worth $700 million to strengthen human capital in Jordan. The Human Capital Program and the Modernizing Education, Skills, and Administrative Reforms (MASAR) Program aim to enhance sustainable and inclusive growth, improve education quality, and provide youth with skills for the future labor market.

With over 66 percent of Jordan’s population under 30, there is a unique opportunity to benefit from the demographic dividend. However, gaps in education access, especially in early childhood, need to be addressed to improve employment opportunities. The programs also focus on investing in health and social assistance to increase resilience and protect families from external shocks.

Jean-Christophe Carret, World Bank Country Director for the Middle East Departmen, emphasized the importance of investing in human capital to achieve development ambitions. The programs will support governance in social sectors, strengthen accountability in public spending, and provide appropriate skills to children and youth for the labor market.

Overall, these programs align with Jordan’s reform priorities and aim to establish a more efficient educational system. By 2029, significant accomplishments are expected, including increased enrollment in kindergarten and vocational programs, and improved teacher appointments based on merit.
