UN Highlights Global Failure to Prevent Atrocities
The UN has emphasized the continued global failure to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity. Despite pledges made during the 2005 World Summit, the promise to protect populations from atrocity crimes remains largely unfulfilled.
UN Special Adviser Mo Bleeker addressed the UN General Assembly, expressing concern over the lack of action on early warnings of atrocity risks. She criticized the ongoing violations of international laws by state and non-state actors, pointing out the challenges faced by the UN Security Council due to the lack of unanimity among permanent members.
Bleeker highlighted the enduring significance of the Responsibility to Protect principle, emphasizing the global commitment to prevent atrocities worldwide. The Responsibility to Protect principle was endorsed by all UN member states in 2005 to prevent genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and crimes against humanity.
Despite the challenges, the UN remains committed to upholding the Responsibility to Protect principle as a collective effort to protect humanity from atrocities.
