A Ukrainian journalist, Dmitry Gordon, has been sentenced to 14 years in prison by a Russian military court for inciting terrorism and spreading false information. The 56-year-old was tried in absentia and was indicted by Russian authorities in May 2022, with charges stemming from a YouTube video where he called for a nuclear strike against Russia.
Judge Roman Kiforenko of the Second Western District Military Court announced the verdict, stating that Gordon must serve the first three years in prison and the remainder in a general regime colony. Additionally, Gordon will be prohibited from managing internet sites for up to three years after his release, with the sentence taking effect upon his detention or extradition to Moscow.
Prosecutors accused Gordon of disseminating false information about Russian military actions during the conflict in Ukraine and inciting terrorist activities. Despite being a prominent figure in Ukraine’s media landscape, Gordon has faced backlash in Russia for his critical views and ties to the Ukrainian government.
