Longtime Trump ally Steve Bannon surrendered at a federal prison on July 1 to begin a four-month sentence for defying a subpoena. He called himself a “political prisoner” and criticized Democrats, including Attorney General Merrick Garland.
Last-minute appeal rejected
Bannon, convicted of two counts of contempt of Congress, was ordered to report to prison after losing his appeal. His lawyers argued executive privilege, but prosecutors disagreed. Republican House leaders are supporting efforts to challenge the subpoena’s legitimacy.
Another Trump aide, Peter Navarro, has also served a prison sentence for contempt of Congress. Bannon is facing separate criminal charges in New York for allegedly defrauding donors.
Bannon’s trial has been postponed, and his appeal is ongoing amidst support from Republican leaders.
