Spain has officially intervened in the case between South Africa and ‘Israel’ concerning the genocide in the Gaza Strip. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) confirmed that Spain submitted a declaration of intervention in the case titled “Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel).”
By invoking its status as a party to the Genocide Convention, Spain utilized its right to intervene under Article 63, paragraph 2. The Spanish foreign ministry emphasized their commitment to international law and responsibility as a State party to the Convention.
South Africa initiated the lawsuit at the end of December following prolonged Israeli attacks on Palestinians in Gaza, accusing Israel of violating the Genocide Convention. Several countries, including Turkey, Libya, and Egypt, have expressed interest in joining the case, showing solidarity in seeking justice for the victims of the conflict.
