Kenyan rights watchdog reports toll of 39 deaths in recent anti-government protests, sparking new wave of activism.

Recent anti-government protests in Kenya have resulted in at least 39 deaths, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). This toll is nearly double the government’s previously disclosed figure and has fueled outrage among activists who are preparing for more protests this week.

The protests were triggered by unpopular tax increases, which have now been withdrawn. From June 18 to July 1, KNCHR recorded 39 deaths, 361 injuries, 32 cases of disappearances, and 627 arrests in connection to the protests countrywide.

The demonstrations, initially peaceful, turned violent after lawmakers passed the contentious legislation. President William Ruto, who took office in 2022, faces the gravest crisis of his tenure as the nation grapples with instability.

Despite Ruto’s promise not to sign the tax bill into law, activists are planning more protests under slogans like “Occupy Everywhere” and “Ruto must go.” The government’s budget shortfall and opposition to fiscal reforms have exacerbated the unrest, leaving the administration vulnerable.
