After Ukraine destroyed much of its weaponry, Russian forces resorted to using old M-46 towed field guns from the Stalin era. Milblogger WarNoir shared images of Russian artillerymen firing these guns loaded with North Korean ammunition, some inscribed with “for Sevastopol.” This refers to an incident in June that killed six people in Crimea. The M-46 gun, designed after WWII, has a 130mm barrel and a range of up to 25 miles. Despite questionable ammunition quality, Russia is using these guns due to their dwindling arsenal.

The M-46 gun’s design, though not ideal, is easy to maneuver and has a high muzzle velocity. Russian forces had around 350 of these guns in storage. The decision to deploy them signifies the extent of damage inflicted by Ukrainian forces. The Ukrainian military expressed concern about Russia’s potential resupply of ammunition. With the ongoing conflict depleting resources, Moscow may turn to North Korea for more supplies. This move highlights the dire situation Russian troops are facing due to Ukrainian opposition since the 2022 invasion.
