Mauritania re-elects Ghazouani as President with 56.12% of the Vote
Incumbent Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani has secured a second term as President of Mauritania, winning the presidential election with 56.12% of the vote, as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).
The election results showed Ghazouani well ahead of his main rival, anti-slavery activist Biram Dah Abeid, who garnered 22.10% of the votes. The third position went to Hamadi Ould Sid’ El Moctar with 12.78% of the votes.
Despite a lower voter turnout of 55.39% compared to the previous election, Ghazouani’s victory solidifies his position as the leader of the relatively stable Sahel region. His commitment to managing threats from armed groups and prioritizing the youth population has been well-received.
Emphasizing economic reforms, renewable energy investments, and the expansion of mining activities, Ghazouani aims to steer Mauritania towards a prosperous future during his second term in office.
