Israel’s Bold Plan for Gaza: Creating Hamas-Free Zones
Israel is gearing up to implement a groundbreaking post-war strategy in Gaza, with the goal of establishing “Hamas-free bubbles” in the region. This innovative plan, as reported by the Financial Times, aims to kickstart the creation of “humanitarian enclaves” in key neighborhoods like Atatra, Beit Hanoun, and Beit Lahiya.
Despite the Israeli Defense Forces’ readiness to launch this pilot program, doubts linger due to Hamas’ strong presence and minimal support from Arab nations. Some insiders have dubbed the initiative a “fantasy,” voicing concerns about its viability.
The strategy involves delivering aid through the Erez crossing to vetted local Palestinians, who will then take charge of distributing resources to residents. Over time, these individuals will assume civil governance duties, with the IDF initially overseeing security operations.
If successful, Israel plans to expand these “bubbles” across Gaza, ultimately sidelining Hamas’ governance after nearly two decades. This move could also apply pressure on Hamas in the ongoing hostage negotiations.
The transition plan, spearheaded by Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, envisions a U.S.-led oversight mechanism involving neighboring countries like Egypt, Jordan, the UAE, and Morocco. This phased strategy will gradually hand over security responsibilities to a Palestinian force, with American support backing the initiative.
