Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani is poised to secure re-election by a significant margin, as indicated by the results from the electoral commission. Despite opposition from main contender Biram Dah Abeid, Ghazouani’s victory is expected to be officially announced on Monday.

In a country where stability has prevailed amidst the regional threat of jihadism, Mauritanians participated in the elections to choose their leader from a pool of seven candidates. The Independent National Electoral Commission revealed that Ghazouani garnered over 56 percent of the votes, surpassing Abeid who is anticipated to receive 22 percent.

Following the announcement, Abeid denounced the results and vowed peaceful protests, calling on security forces to refrain from supporting the regime. Tensions escalated as supporters demonstrated in the capital and security forces surrounded Abeid’s campaign headquarters.

Despite challenges, turnout was estimated at 55 percent with utmost efforts to maintain peace and order in the country. Ghazouani, prioritizing the youth, has steered the nation towards progress amidst regional turmoil.

As observers monitor the situation, Mauritania braces for a significant political transition with hopes for continued stability and prosperity.
