Marine Le Pen’s National Rally Scores Big in French Election

Marine Le Pen and her far-right National Rally (RN) have claimed a significant victory in France’s snap election, winning close to 34 percent of the vote in the first round of the parliamentary election. While this is a big win for the RN, the party still falls short of gaining an absolute majority in the parliament.

Le Pen called on French citizens to support her party in the second round. Despite his defeat, President Emmanuel Macron emphasized the importance of standing up against the far right in the upcoming round of voting.

International reactions poured in as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni noted the diminishing impact of demonizing far-right voters, while UK Labour Party candidate Keir Starmer stressed the need for progressives to offer solutions to challenges in the UK and Europe.

As markets reacted favorably to the election results, tensions and warnings about the rise of the far right echoed across Europe.
