Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally (RN) party emerged ahead in the first round of France’s parliamentary elections on Sunday, exit polls showed, but the unpredictable final result will depend on days of horsetrading before next week’s runoff.

The RN was seen winning around 33% of the vote, leading over leftist and centrist rivals. President Emmanuel Macron’s Together alliance secured 22 percent while The New Popular Front, a left-wing coalition, was projected to win around 28.5 percent.

The results set the stage for a week of political bargaining ahead of the July 7 runoff, determining if the RN can form a government with Macron’s pro-EU alliance. The outcome of this horsetrading in France’s 577 constituencies remains uncertain due to changing political dynamics.
