Energy sector plays vital role in Bulgarian-Azerbaijani cooperation – minister

BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 1. Bulgarian Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov highlighted the importance of the energy sector in Bulgarian-Azerbaijani cooperation during the sixth meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation in Baku.

Malinov praised Azerbaijan as a strategic partner in the energy sector, noting the ongoing dialogue between the two countries’ energy ministries. He expressed gratitude for Azerbaijan’s support in diversifying Bulgaria’s energy sources and supplies, particularly through the Southern Gas Corridor.

The minister also highlighted the significance of the 2023 opening of the SOCAR office in Sofia, which has strengthened the energy partnership between Bulgaria and Azerbaijan. Malinov emphasized Bulgaria’s readiness to receive and transit significant volumes of gas, citing the country’s gas interconnectors in the region.

Bulgaria has been receiving gas from the Azerbaijani Shah Deniz field since 2021, and SOCAR has been supplying surplus gas to Bulgaria. The start of gasification in Bulgaria was made possible with SOCAR’s assistance, with gas supplies to industrial facilities commencing in June.
