Beijing introduces major regulation for autonomous vehicles after 5-year wait

Beijing is moving closer to embracing autonomous driving technology with the drafting of a comprehensive regulation by the municipal government. The regulation aims to support technological breakthroughs in key areas such as sensors, semiconductors, operating systems, and algorithms for driverless cars. It also includes provisions for a citywide safety monitoring platform and the systematic use of data collected by autonomous vehicles.

The government is also planning to establish a regulated sandbox environment for testing new technologies, scenarios, and products in an inclusive and prudent manner. This marks a significant shift for Beijing, which has been cautious about road security in the past but is now showing a greater willingness to embrace autonomous vehicles.

Companies like Baidu, Pony.ai, WeRide, and AutoX are already operating automated shuttle services in Beijing, marking a significant step towards the widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles in the city. The proposed regulation is open for public opinion until July 29 and aims to promote and regulate the innovative activities of self-driving cars.
