Australia has significantly increased the visa fee for international students in an effort to regulate record migration and alleviate pressure on the housing market. The visa fee has jumped to A$1,600 from A$710, making it more expensive compared to other countries like the U.S. and Canada. Additionally, visitor visa holders and temporary graduate visa holders are now prohibited from applying for a student visa onshore.
The government aims to enhance the integrity of the international education system and create a more equitable migration system. Recent data revealed a 60% increase in net immigration to a record 548,800 individuals in the year to Sept 30, 2023. With tightening visa rules and increased English language requirements, the government is taking steps to control the influx of international students.
Universities Australia CEO Luke Sheehy cautioned that the ongoing policy changes may jeopardize the country’s economic reliance on international student fees, which contribute significantly to the economy. Despite the challenges, international education remains a vital export industry for Australia, boasting a value of A$36.4 billion in the 2022-2023 financial year.
