Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai has decided to take a three-month break from active politics to attend a fellowship on leadership in London offered by the United Kingdom’s Foreign Office. Annamalai’s application for the Chevening Gurukul Fellowship for Leadership and Excellence program has been accepted and he is set to attend the prestigious program from mid-September to December.

He has requested leave from the BJP high command to pursue this opportunity. It remains to be seen if the BJP will accept his application and appoint an acting president during his absence. Annamalai, known for his rapid rise in the BJP, applied for the fellowship as the founder of ‘We The Leaders’ foundation, an NGO he established after leaving the Indian Police Service.

Despite facing some criticism for his statements, Annamalai played a significant role in bringing the BJP into the spotlight in Tamil Nadu. His dedication and efforts resulted in the party securing over 11% of the votes in the 2024 elections, even without alliances with major parties in the state.
