The Taliban government is urging the world to lift sanctions imposed on Afghanistan, despite failing to address concerns over human rights and girls’ education. This was highlighted by Afghan Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid at the Doha talks, emphasizing the slow process of easing financial and trade sanctions.
During the two-day UN-hosted meeting in Qatar, discussions focused on increasing international engagement with Afghanistan and coordinated responses to economic issues and counter-narcotics efforts. Mujahid acknowledged policy differences with certain countries but urged against imposing pressures that affect Afghan lives.
Since taking power in 2021, the Taliban government has faced global condemnation for its strict interpretation of Islam, particularly towards women. Despite these challenges, Mujahid expressed Kabul’s commitment to positive interaction and improving bilateral relationships.
Special envoys from various countries, including Pakistan and the US, attended the meeting. Pakistan’s Special Representative on Afghanistan, Asif Durrani, met with his US counterpart, Tom West, to discuss the situation.
This UN-hosted event aims to revive Afghanistan’s private sector and counter-narcotics strategy, with countries like Saudi Arabia expressing willingness to reopen their embassy in Kabul. The talks aim to address critical issues and foster positive engagement with Afghanistan.
