Why is France holding a snap election?
French President Emmanuel Macron called for legislative elections after his centrist party was defeated by the far-right National Rally (RN) party led by Marine Le Pen in the European Parliament elections. The RN is leading in pre-election polls, potentially forming France’s first far-right government since World War II.
The new leftist New Popular Front (NFP) alliance and Macron’s centrist Renaissance party are also competing in the election. Despite Macron’s party having the most lawmakers in the National Assembly, the RN is expected to gain the most seats. However, it remains uncertain if they will secure the majority needed for governance.
