The conflict in northern Gaza escalated on Saturday, with explosions, air strikes, and gunfire causing chaos in the area. Tens of thousands of Palestinians have been uprooted, worsening the already “unbearable” living conditions in the territory, according to the UN.
Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants were engaged in ongoing fighting with Israeli forces, resulting in numerous casualties on both sides. The Israeli military reported a significant number of militants killed and the discovery of weapons and tunnel shafts in the area.
The resurgence of violence comes after months of relative calm, with Israel declaring the dismantling of Hamas militants in the north. Despite Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggesting the war was winding down, experts fear a prolonged conflict may follow.
The situation has also raised tensions on Israel’s northern border with Lebanon, with Iran warning of a potential “obliterating” war if Israel attacks Lebanon. The conflict, which began with Hamas’s attack in October, has resulted in numerous casualties and displaced populations on both sides of the border.
The UN has reported widespread destruction of infrastructure and a dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, with many residents displaced and struggling to find essentials like water and food.
