Russia’s Defense Ministry said Friday that there has been an increase in U.S. drone flights over the Black Sea, prompting a strong response and a warning of potential “direct confrontation” with NATO.

The Defense Ministry stated, “Such flights raise the risk of airspace incidents with Russian aircraft, escalating the possibility of a direct clash between the alliance and Russia.” It also accused the U.S. of aiding Ukraine in attacking Russian targets, indicating growing U.S. and NATO involvement in the Ukraine conflict.

Following accusations of U.S. assistance in Ukrainian missile strikes on Crimea, Russia’s military Defense Minister called for swift responses to drone provocations, though reports of a Russian jet downing a U.S. drone remain unconfirmed. With tensions high, there are concerns about direct confrontation in the Black Sea, as seen in a 2023 interception of a U.S. drone by Russia.

The United States, emphasizing adherence to international law, conducts routine drone missions in the Black Sea. This ongoing situation underscores the delicate balance between the two nuclear powers.
