Israeli Opposition Leader Denies Contacts with Netanyahu Over Investigation Committee
Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has denied any contacts with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the formation of an official investigation committee into the events of Oct. 7, 2023. Lapid emphasized that only the President of the Supreme Court should determine the composition of the investigative committee.
Netanyahu is reportedly seeking to select members of the committee in collaboration with the opposition to prevent the Supreme Court from having a say in the matter. Despite facing international condemnation for its offensive in Gaza, Israel has not accepted responsibility for failing to anticipate attacks by Palestinian resistance fighters.
The families of Israeli hostages and soldiers killed in the war have petitioned the government to establish an official investigation committee. The International Court of Justice has ordered Israel to halt its operations in Rafah, where many Palestinians sought refuge.
Despite ongoing tensions, the need for an immediate investigation committee remains critical for addressing the events of Oct. 7 and ensuring accountability.
