Bengaluru: Minister of State for Railways V Somanna announced that the union government will fully fund the construction of 32 railway under/overbridges in Karnataka. Initially, these bridges were to be half-funded by the state government.
The railways approved building 93 bridges to eliminate level crossings in various parts of Karnataka at a cost of Rs 1,699 crore. 49 bridges were supposed to be funded equally by the railways and the state government.
Karnataka withdrew fund allocation approval for 32 bridges, prompting the railways to bear the entire cost of 14 bridges at Rs 208.4 crore and complete the remaining 18 bridges costing Rs 590 crore. In the future, all level crossing eliminating bridges will be fully funded by the railways.
Karnataka has a significant number of level crossings contributing to traffic congestion, particularly in Bengaluru. The meeting also discussed various railway projects and initiatives in Karnataka to enhance passenger services and infrastructure.
The meeting was attended by Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje, state ministers, MPs, MLAs, and MLC to discuss the development of railway projects in Karnataka.
