Five Lesotho nationals were apprehended at the Qashasnek border crossing trying to smuggle R1.48 million in South African currency concealed in plastic bags. The suspects were caught during a routine vehicle search by Junior Border Guards in a joint operation with Border Management Authority (BMA), SANDF, and SAPS.
The suspects, including four who were banned from entry, were found in possession of the cash. The confiscated money underwent verification before being deposited in a state account for further investigation.
BMA commissioner Dr. Michael Masiapato praised the efforts of officials in detecting and preventing criminal activities at the border, emphasizing a zero-tolerance approach towards illegal actions at ports of entry.
