US to test ice cream and butter for H5N1 bird flu virus

As concerns grow over the spread of the bird flu virus, recent testing has shown that fragments of the virus have been detected in commercial milk samples. While pasteurisation is believed to kill off the virus, further testing is being conducted to ensure it is not capable of causing infections in humans.

The FDA and CDC are strongly advising against consuming unpasteurised dairy products to prevent potential infections. The CDC reported that 24 cats in Texas contracted H5N1 from consuming raw milk, resulting in severe illnesses and deaths.

Despite these warnings, around 10 million Americans continue to consume raw dairy products, with some considering it a ‘superfood’. This poses a significant health risk, as highlighted by the recent cases of bird flu infections.
