The USS Wasp has entered the eastern Mediterranean Sea, with the aim of preventing further escalation of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. While the ship has the capability to assist in evacuations if a full-scale war erupts, its primary purpose is deterrence, according to U.S. officials.

Similar to the deployment of the USS Bataan after previous conflicts, the Wasp’s presence is meant to provide options and help contain the situation. With F-35 fighter jets on board, the ship is equipped to carry out airstrike missions if necessary.

Operating under the U.S. European Command, the Wasp is sailing alongside the USS Oak Hill and USS New York, both capable of transporting troops and supplies. The move comes as tensions between Israel and Hezbollah continue to rise, with daily cross-border strikes occurring since recent attacks.

As concerns for major escalation fluctuate, the U.S. remains vigilant in the region, closely monitoring the situation. With various naval assets in place, including the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower’s return home, efforts are focused on maintaining stability and preventing further conflict.
