Barbados Braces for Major Hurricane Beryl
As Tropical Storm Beryl moves towards the southeast Caribbean, forecasters predict it will strengthen into a dangerous major hurricane, reaching Barbados late Sunday. The storm, with winds of at least 111 mph, is expected to be a Category 3 or higher.
Hurricane watches are in place for Barbados, St. Lucia, Grenada, and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, while a tropical storm watch is issued for Martinique and Tobago. Beryl, located about 820 miles east-southeast of Barbados, is moving west at 23 mph with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph.
Experts are surprised by Beryl’s rapid development over warm waters and high ocean heat content, making it the strongest June tropical storm on record in the tropical Atlantic. Barbadian Prime Minister Mia Mottley is urging people to prepare for the storm, as shelters open in nearby islands.
The storm comes during a busy hurricane season, with predictions of above-average activity. Beryl is expected to bring heavy rains and high surf to the region, prompting precautions and preparations.
Despite the threat, some residents like hostel manager Mark Spence remain calm and prepared for any eventuality. As Barbados and neighboring islands brace for impact, everyone is hoping for the best as they face the approaching storm.
