Togo strengthens Covid measures following hajj fatalities.

Togo has joined Senegal in implementing Covid screening tests and mandatory face masks for pilgrims returning from the hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. This move comes after concerns over a respiratory illness outbreak among pilgrims. The Togolese government has issued guidelines for pilgrims to undergo tests, wear masks, maintain social distancing, and avoid large gatherings for 10 days upon their return.

With over 1,300 deaths reported at this year’s hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, health precautions are critical. The extreme temperatures and long distances traveled by pilgrims have raised additional health concerns. About 18% of Togo’s population is Muslim, with 2,500 citizens participating in the hajj this year.

Special flights chartered by the Togolese government are bringing pilgrims back from Mecca, prioritizing their health and safety. This measure underscores the commitment to preventing the spread of Covid-19 and protecting the well-being of the Togolese population.
