The Taliban authorities have asserted that women’s rights issues in Afghanistan are internal matters to be addressed by the country itself. This statement comes ahead of United Nations-led talks, where the exclusion of Afghan women from the main discussions has sparked criticism.
Despite facing criticism for imposing strict restrictions on women since coming into power in 2021, the Taliban government will participate in the upcoming talks in Qatar. Civil society representatives, including women’s rights groups, will have a chance to engage with international envoys and UN officials separately.
Rights groups have expressed concern over the exclusion of Afghan women from the main meetings and the absence of human rights issues on the agenda. The Taliban government, led by spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, has acknowledged women’s concerns but emphasized that the solutions should come from within Afghanistan to prevent further conflict.
While seeking positive relations with other countries, Mujahid highlighted economic challenges as a priority for the government. The talks aim to enhance international coordination with the Taliban authorities, who are yet to be officially recognized by any state.
