Russia Protests Japan’s Military Exercises, Accuses PM Kishida of Escalation
Russia lodged a protest against Japan for planning joint military exercises on Hokkaido, accusing Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of dangerous escalation. The exercises, to be held with Germany and Spain, were deemed “categorically unacceptable” by Russia’s Foreign Ministry, citing security threats to the Russian Federation.
The note issued to Japan’s Embassy stated that Moscow would take countermeasures to safeguard its defense capability. The ongoing territorial dispute over the Northern Territories/Kuril Islands has strained relations between Japan and Russia, hindering a peace treaty since WWII. Japan supports Ukraine, while expressing concern over Russia’s military infrastructure on the disputed islands.
The protest highlights tensions in Northeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region, with Russia warning of potential repercussions. Amidst geopolitical complexities, Japan and Russia continue to navigate the delicate balance of diplomacy and defense.
