Police to face scrutiny over handling of alleged domestic violence murder

A critical incident investigation has been initiated to scrutinize the police response to a tragic domestic violence episode in northern NSW. A woman was allegedly murdered, prompting authorities to review the circumstances leading to her death.

A man is expected to face murder charges following the death of a woman, thought to be in her 40s, at a residence on Johnston Street in Casino. Authorities were alerted to the incident through a Triple Zero call around 1:30 am.

Despite the delayed acknowledgement of the call, authorities swiftly reached the scene at 2:27 am. The woman was found breathing but unconscious with severe head injuries.

The woman’s condition deteriorated, leading to her death at the scene. A 31-year-old man was apprehended and is currently facing a murder charge.

An independent scrutiny of the police’s response timeline has been urged by Assistant Commissioner Peter McKenna APM, emphasizing the commitment to handling domestic violence cases effectively.

“Our dedication to combating domestic violence is unwavering,” McKenna stated. “It remains a top priority for us.”
