Celebratory Gunfire at Weddings in Sudan Causes Concern Amid Ongoing Conflict
The residents of Omdurman’s Karari locality in Sudan have expressed their worry over the tradition of celebratory gunfire at weddings amidst the ongoing conflict in the country. They believe that this practice leads to injuries and creates fear and panic among the population, urging the government to take action.
Alaa-Adin Abdallah described the weekly celebratory gunfire as “tormenting” for the residents, adding that they are already dealing with enough stress. Mohammed Osman highlighted the excessive stray bullets causing fear, power outages, and personal injuries, emphasizing the urgent need for government intervention.
In 2021, the Governor of Khartoum prohibited the use of firearms and loud explosives at public and private events, imposing penalties for offenders. Sudanese citizens are calling for an end to celebratory gunfire during this tense period of conflict to prevent further harm and fear among the population.
It is time to put an end to the use of firearms at celebrations and find joyous ways to mark events without causing harm or instilling fear in the community.
