In Port Harcourt, Nigeria, a dedicated group of residents is taking action to restore the mangrove forests, a vital ecosystem in the Niger Delta. Despite threats from oil pollution, illegal logging, and invasive species, the team in Bundu is determined to bring these forests back to life.
Led by local community leader David Oba, the project aims to protect the mangroves’ biodiversity and provide a sanctuary for wildlife. With the help of training from the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development, the team is planting saplings and working to reverse the damage caused by human activity.
While Nigeria boasts one of the highest mangrove coverages globally, the forests are shrinking due to various factors. Oil pollution, in particular, poses a significant threat, with frequent spills impacting the livelihoods of residents.
Despite government initiatives that have yet to be fully implemented, the community in Bundu is taking matters into their own hands. Through collaboration and dedication, they are determined to save their mangrove forests and protect the environment for future generations.
