Former health minister Masoud Pezeshkian (L) and former top negotiator Saeed Jalili will head into a runoff set for July 5, 2024.

Iran to Hold Runoff Presidential Election

Iran will hold a runoff presidential election after the initial vote did not produce an outright winner, announced by the election headquarters spokesperson, Mohsen Eslami. Former health minister Masoud Pezeshkian garnered 10.4 million votes while former lead nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili received 9.4 million, leading them into a runoff on July 5.

The runoff is scheduled after no candidate secured 50% plus one vote in the initial election round. Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi expressed readiness for the runoff and commended the Iranian people and election authorities for a safe and successful election process.

In the final tally, Pezeshkian led with 42.45% of the votes while Jalili followed closely behind with 38.61%. Parliament speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and former interior affairs minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi came in third and fourth, respectively.
