The unrest began when lawmakers passed unpopular tax hikes under pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This decision sparked violent clashes in Nairobi and other towns, resulting in tragic deaths and injuries. President William Ruto’s administration eventually withdrew the bill after widespread public outrage.

Following the protests, a state-funded human rights commission recorded 22 deaths and 300 injured individuals, prompting calls for a transparent investigation. Human Rights Watch emphasized the need for the Kenyan government to prioritize human rights over economic concerns, urging for a fair social contract that protects everyone’s rights.
