The French far-right has taken a significant lead in the latest polls, causing uncertainty about the country’s political future just days before the snap elections. President Emmanuel Macron faces the possibility of a challenging “cohabitation” with a prime minister from the opposing party or a chamber without a stable majority for governing France, the EU’s second-largest economy, and top military power.
Voter surveys indicate that the National Rally (RN) led by Marine Le Pen is expected to receive over 35% of the votes in the first round, with left alliances following at 29% and Macron’s centrists lagging behind at 20%. The lightning campaign aimed at countering the far-right bloc’s power has not shifted the major trends, intensifying the uncertainty surrounding the results.
With a potential turnout of two-thirds of eligible voters, the election outcome remains unpredictable. Polling firms predict different scenarios, with the RN possibly securing an absolute majority in the parliament. Le Pen is already planning for a significant win, vowing strong leadership in areas such as defense and international relations. Macron and his competitors are making final efforts to sway voters in their favor before campaigning is suspended on Saturday.
