The European Union has implemented a new set of sanctions targeting Belarus, mirroring restrictions previously imposed on Russia. The move aims to strengthen existing sanctions against Russia by preventing the evasion of these restrictions. The sanctions include bans on imports of gold, diamonds, helium, coal, and mineral products from Belarus, as well as exports of goods suitable for oil refining and gas liquefaction. Additionally, exports of maritime navigation goods, technologies, and luxury items to Belarus are prohibited.

Furthermore, the EU Council has expanded the ban on the transportation of goods by roads within the bloc using trailers and semi-trailers registered in Belarus. Additionally, the provision of services to Belarus, its government, and entities has been restricted. These measures are in response to Belarus’ alleged support for Moscow during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, leading to increased sanctions against Belarus earlier this year.

Belarus has attempted to mitigate the impact of these sanctions by adjusting customs legislation and creating complex logistical chains. Despite facing economic challenges, both Belarus and Russia have criticized the sanctions as unjust. The EU’s actions seek to reinforce existing measures and prevent the circumvention of sanctions supporting the bloc’s broader diplomatic efforts.
