Bolivian leader claims coup chief aimed to become president

Bolivia's President Luis Arce speaks during an interview at the government palace, in La Paz, Bolivia, Friday, June 28, 2024, two days after Army troops stormed the palace in what Arce called a coup attempt.

Bolivian President Luis Arce revealed a former general’s botched plan to seize power in a failed coup, dismissing claims of an economic crisis in the country.

Arce defended his government against accusations of orchestrating a self-coup and distanced himself from the alleged coup plotters and their families.

He criticized his political rival, Evo Morales, for obstructing legislative actions and acknowledged efforts to boost Bolivia’s economy through lithium exploitation and diversification.

The President assured that Bolivia’s economy was growing despite challenges and addressed concerns about intermittent fuel and currency shortages.
