A Panamanian court has acquitted all 28 people charged with money laundering in connection with the Panama Papers scandal, concluding a trial that began in April. The leaked documents in 2016 exposed how the wealthy and powerful hide their wealth in tax havens.
Jurgen Mossack and Ramon Fonseca, founders of Mossack Fonseca, were among those exonerated. The judge ruled the evidence was insufficient for criminal responsibility.
The trial, lasting 85 hours in Panama City, considered 50 pieces of evidence. After deliberation, all charges were dropped due to lack of due process in evidence gathering.
The Panama Papers, the biggest data leak in history, implicated individuals like David Cameron, Volodymyr Zelensky, and Lionel Messi. The leaked information revealed connections to 12 heads of state, including corrupt dictators.
